.
While all children will be taught their times tables at school, even today few will learn their
division times tables - i.e. they will learn 1x2=2, 2x2=4, 3x2=6 etc, but will not learn 2÷2=1, 4÷2=2, 6÷2=3. Multiplication and division go hand in hand since one is the reverse of the other, therefore times tables and division times tables should be learned at the same time.
Some children manage to memorise their
times tables without really understanding multiplication; but very few could manage to learn their times tables AND division times tables without developing a good understanding of the concepts of both
multiplication and division.
Therefore when practising a particular times table, make sure the child practises the corresponding
division times table immediately afterwards to
reinforce what they have already learned and to further develop their
understanding.
